Once a mahapurush said - "Haarkar jeetne waale ko Baazigar kehtey hain..." And we instantly agreed.
But what do we call a person who would be at the losing end come what may?
The makers of Bigg Boss 18 had a lot at stake when they gave the tag of 'laadla' to erstwhile TV superstar Vivian Dsena as he - by his own admission - gave a nod to participate in the reality show after eight long years.
The 'laadla' move was a gamble in itself. This was an open declaration of blatant bias, and surprisingly nobody seemed to question the motive.
All contestants, in fact, seemed to grow intimidated by Vivian's largesse -- so much so that they took turns to make alliances with him to be in the good books of Bigg Boss.
Vivian was unabashedly given more prominence in tasks, zero snide remarks on how he should conduct himself inside the house and a lot of praise on Weekend Ka Vaar episodes.
One would expect an accomplished actor, or shall we say superstar, like him to be modest, trustworthy, headstrong and confrontational. But he was everything except these.
As days changed into weeks, Vivian's game nosedived until a point of no return. Even when his wife Nouran Aly gave him a quick lesson on friendship and loyalty from the confession room and during the visit to the house in the family week, Vivian's only takeaway was a quick chat with Avinash Mishra, his "friend", and a banter with Karan Veer Mehra and Shilpa Shirodkar.
The makers again tried to resuscitate his game; his CPR was Bigg Boss 7 contestant and his co-star Kamya Punjabi bashing him in front of the housemates for his lacklustre game. Vivian did not take this well too, turning Kamya against him and appealing for votes for Karan and Chum Darang on social media.
While many considered this as a blatantly biased move to uplift Vivian's game, reality is this was a double-edged sword. From this point if Vivian improved his game, the channel would justify him winning the trophy. And if he did not, his loss would also be justified - pacifying his fans.
Having said that, many still believe had it not been for his popular characters on the channel, Vivian would have been ousted from the house way before any discussion around his game began -- because he practically did not have any. His only 'muddas' inside the house were his coffee, the haldi stain on his blanket, the bathroom bucket, Shilpa not giving him exclusivity and his wife's lessons.
Vivian only stood up for himself when it came to his OCD, but never in front of Avinash Mishra who nominated him just to be seen and noticed. He said derogatory things about the person behind his back who he claimed he had been friends with for past 12 years -- maybe that's the reason 80 per cent of the TV industry is supporting that friend and not him.
His assertive nature only showed fangs in front of the ladies - Chaahat Pandey, Shrutika Arjun and Chum Darang. He admonished Shilpa Shirodkar's every attempt to maintain friendship, and yet played victim every time.
In comparison, Karan Veer Mehra, Avinash Mishra and even Rajat Dalal for that matter have exhibited a better personality on the show. They stood up, they fought, they laughed, they danced... they played! Vivian, in fact, was mostly seen sleeping through the day and even through important fights in the house. His "slow burn" style of speaking did not help either.
The winner of Bigg Boss 18 will be declared on Sunday. And the channel can very well go ahead and announce the most expected name that can be at 11.59 pm. But will it be worth it?
Was the channel's 'laadla' actually able to earn the tag of 'janta ka laadla' as well? Will Bigg Boss 18 be called another biased season of the show for years to come? Or will the rightful person who actually exhibited their real, raw and true personality on the show win the trophy?
The makers cannot decide that for sure. It's the audience that has to break the narrative. Vote for the right person. The choice is yours!
