Chhannulal Mishra, popular Hindustani classical singer, passes away at 89

Padma Vibhushan awardee and legendary Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra passed away early on Thursday (October 2, 2025). He was 89. According to his daughter Namrata Mishra, the maestro breathed his last at around 4 a.m. in Mirzapur, where he had been living with his youngest daughter's family. Mishra had been battling age-related health issues for several weeks and was admitted to hospital for the last 17 18 days. His condition worsened late Wednesday night, and despite treatment, he could not recover.

Tributes Pour In For The Singer

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief at Mishra's demise, recalling his long association with the singer. In a heartfelt message on X, the PM said it was his good fortune to have always received Pandit Mishra's blessings. Modi also remembered him as one of the proposers of his candidature from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in 2014, and praised his invaluable contribution to Indian arts and culture.

A Life Devoted to Music And Art

He was Born in Azamgarh in 1936, Pandit Mishra then went on to become a towering figure in Hindustani classical music. He was trained by his father Badri Prasad Mishra, Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of the Kirana gharana, and Thakur Jaidev Singh, he became an exponent of the Banaras gharana and the Purab Ang tradition of Thumri.

His repertoire included Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri, and Bhajan, and he was celebrated for bringing deep emotion and richness to every performance. Over his lifetime, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan (2010) and Padma Vibhushan (2020).

Final Journey

Pandit Mishra's last rites will be performed in Varanasi at 5 p.m. He is survived by three daughters and a son. His wife and one daughter had passed away four years ago.
