Pope Francis dies at 88: Russell Crowe, Whoopi Goldberg and other celebs mourn the loss with emotional tributes

Pope Francis died at the age of 88 on April 21, 2025. He breathed his last on Easter Monday at his residence Vatican's Casa Santa Marta. He was the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He died a day after celebrating Easter. In a statement, Cardinal Kevin Farrell shared "This morning at 7:35 am (0535 GMT) the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father." Soon, many took to social media to mourn the loss. Some of the top celebrities and well-known personalities too shared tributes for Pope Francis. From the world of glamour, stars like Russell Crowe, Whoopi Goldberg and many more penned emotional notes.

Unhinged star Russell Crowe took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and wrote, "A beautiful day in Rome, but, a sad day for the faithful. RIP Francis." Call Me Claus star Whoopi Goldberg shared a picture of her with Pope Francis and wrote, "He was the closest in a long time that seemed to remember that Christ's love enveloped believer and none believer. He felt more like Pope John the 23rd who made belief real. Sail on Pope Frances with your love of humanity & Laughter." Spanish actor Antonio Banderas shared a tribute stating that Pope Francis showed kindness, love and mercy to the neediest. Bridgeton star Adjoa Andoh also penned a note for Pope Francis.

Some of the Indian celebrities to penned tributes for Pope Francis. South Indian star Vishnu Manchu wrote, "Deeply saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. A towering symbol of compassion, humility, and peace. He touched millions with his grace and moral courage. The world has lost a spiritual giant. May his soul rest in eternal peace."
